Blow us away!
One of the blogs that I follow is Seth Godin’s. No surprise, as he is such a definitive voice in marketing. His recent post really resonated with me. He advised that everyone should be basically competent in graphic design. Of course, graphic designers were less than happy with this post.
This reminded me of my own creative agency. I find myself frustrated with them so often, and often I ended up hand holding them through the process. (Yes, I WISH my company would do an agency review, but I don’t think that’s in the immediate future…)
The graphic designers were unhappy that perhaps they feel threatened that they won’t get gigs if everyone thinks that they can be a graphic designer. But the truth is we don’t want to be one. We want to be a marketer. We want to strategize. We want to build the business.
But I find myself going through revisions and revisions with my agency. Half of the time, I ended up hand holding them through the process. Half of the time, they just ignore part of the creative brief… it’s a very frustrating process. And of course, I’m still not pleased with the end result, because at the end of the day, I wanted stuffs that are better than what I could come up with in my head. I wanted my agency to blow me away. But short of that, I settled for what I could get.
This is all particularly annoying since as marketers, we are always dealing with consumers that are getting smarter and smarter, and they demand more and more from us. We continuously have to innovate to blow them away. So, creative people… we are going to get smarter and demand more… blow us away!
